About Acrophobia
Fear of Heights – Phobia Overview
As with most situations that have the potential to be dangerous, a healthy amount of caution keeps us safe when up high on an object or close to an edge. However, people with acrophobia often panic or freeze out of fear when up high. From driving or walking over a bridge to climbing a ladder, having a fear of heights can really get in the way for a sufferer. This can be exacerbated further by the potential onset of vertigo, leading a person to become disorientated under certain conditions. Fear of heights is one of the most common phobias affecting approximately 5% of the world’s population.
Physical Symptoms
The physical symptoms, generally associated with the mind and body’s panic response, are not dissimilar to other phobias. These include (but are not limited to) sweating, racing heartbeat, shaking, dizziness and nausea.
Cognitive Symptoms
Cognitive symptoms relate to how a sufferer feels or thinks. In the case of a fear of heights, these thoughts and feelings often lead to behavioural symptoms of avoidance. Cognitive symptoms can include:
- Being fearful of getting trapped or stuck anywhere high
- Feelings of panic and disorientation when thinking of or being up high. Examples include walking up stairs, crossing bridges or looking out of windows
- Worrying excessively about heights and ways that height may be encountered in day to day life
Behavioural Symptoms
The intensity of acrophobia can vary greatly from individual to individual. People with milder symptoms normally get on just fine with minor avoidance of heights and without the need for treatment. However, a more severe fear of heights can lead to a great deal of worry and planning to avoid certain situations or locations. Common behavioural symptoms include:
- Avoiding stairs, lifts, escalators, bridges, tall building windows or any other location that may expose you to height. This often means planning a longer route and really gets in the way of day to day living
- Refraining from the use of objects such as ladders or climbing onto anything deemed to be too high

Filipe, thank you so much for restoring my faith in myself and for guiding me in a such helpful, positive and constructive way. Your support and calm and reassuring approach has made such a tremendous difference to my life and how I will continue to approach things going forwards. To be able cast away the fear that was constantly looming so heavily over me has enabled me to relax and focus on enjoying what life has to offer, no longer feeling constrained and restricted. I am truly excited about exploring what I can achieve in the future that I never before believed would be possible. Thank you so very much.
I started this course feeling that my phobia was just something I was born with and would never be able to overcome. After only the first session my anxiety towards it had become manageable and a subject I can actually begin to talk about. The course has given me the tools I need to work to control my phobia and regain control over my fear. Huge thank you to Filipe I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Really glad to have worked with Filipe. I started to notice small, incremental changes quite soon after our first session and since finishing them I’ve definitely noticed a difference in how my phobia impacts my life (far far less than before). Highly recommend.
I have been suffering for a few years with a very specific fear that has been quite debilitating. In just one session I immediately saw improvement in my anxiety levels and self control- and by the end of the three sessions I was completely fear free and able to relax entirely. I am highly satisfied with the treatment and would recommend it to anyone with phobias and anxiety issues.
