Phobia Treatment, The Phobia Specialist | Expert Phobia Treatment | Book Online

Welcome. If you are looking to overcome your fear, you’re in the right place. As a therapist who has exclusively treated phobias for over seven years, I have extensive experience helping clients overcome their fears and live with freedom and confidence, often within just 3 focused sessions.

Unlike traditional exposure therapy, which can be daunting, my approach is designed to be safe, supported and achievable. Rather than forcing yourself to ‘push through’ fear, we create positive shifts that gently replace old reactions.

You don’t need to understand where your fear began in order to overcome it, and you don’t have to face it alone. My work is personalised and integrative, combining proven therapeutic approaches to help you feel calm, in control and confident again. I am registered with the CNHC and NCH, ensuring professional standards and ethics.

You will find plenty of information about me, phobias and the treatment throughout the site, and booking a consultation is simple using the online calendar. I’m here to help, so please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Examples of fears and phobias we often support with. If yours isn’t listed, just ask.
What does the phobia treatment involve?
Drawing on my years of experience in assisting phobic clients, I have developed a unique blend of evidence-based techniques and personalised approaches that will maximise your success. My approach is personalised and integrative, combining Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to effectively address phobias in a relaxed manner.
Is online therapy effective?
Yes, absolutely. I have worked with clients both online and face-to-face, achieving consistent results in both formats. Online sessions use the same proven techniques and structure, all from the comfort of your own home.
How many sessions?
The programme is delivered over three structured sessions designed specifically to help overcome isolated phobias.
How long are the sessions?
People are all different, and because some of the work we do involves practical exercises, the duration of each session can vary slightly. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes.
I always allow a 90-minute block to ensure we have enough time to complete everything that’s needed in a calm and relaxed manner, without ever feeling rushed.
What about complex or multiple phobias?
We begin with three structured sessions, which form the core programme. If further support is needed, we can continue with weekly sessions to help you build confidence and maintain progress as you transition forward.
How much will it cost?
All pricing is upfront and transparent and displayed prior to making a booking here
Do I need to know how my phobia started?
Thankfully no, most of my clients, especially those with lifelong phobias, have no idea where it started. The good news is we don’t need to know to treat your phobia.
I’m neurodivergent, will that affect the sessions?
Not at all. The programme is always adapted to suit each individual’s needs and pace, and we can tailor the approach to ensure you feel comfortable and supported throughout. The sessions are structured but flexible, allowing us to adjust things such as communication style, or pacing as needed.
I have experience working with clients with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), who have responded very well to the treatment and the structured format of the sessions.
Where are you based?
I live in a small village in Mid Devon, England. However, all sessions are held online via video call, making my specialist services easily accessible no matter where you live.
How do I book?
You can check availability and book your free consultation directly on my website. If you need any help booking, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll be happy to assist you.

I was not in a good place. I have had a phobia of heights as far back as I can remember and avoided going to places where I would be high. However now my anxiety levels became even worse by effecting my driving on motorways becoming anxious and having to stop often. After one session with Filipe and listening to audio book my driving has got back to normal and no longer feel anxious about driving on motorway. After further sessions & therapy can now go up mountains to the top and enjoy the view and being in control. Amazing work thank you so much. Really appreciate the help and support

I realised I had a problem with house spiders when I would freeze, sob and effectively ask strangers to come into my house to remove them. If there was one in the bathroom, I had to barricade it and go without until someone could come (despite having a second bathroom, however I wouldn't go in it incase of spiders). It was really starting to get in the way of my daily life, especially now it is autumn and 'spider season'. I'd find my mind being consumed with worry about coming to home to one. I knew it was really bad when one was on my stairs and I genuinely considered going out the window. I really enjoyed the sessions and found them informative, relaxing and so helpful. Filipe was so supportive, thorough and helped me recognise and celebrate my successes. I never thought I'd be able to live a life without extreme fear of spiders and be able to be free of the worry about coming home to them. After my sessions finished, I have actually faced a house spider twice and was able to catch it in a glass on both occasions. The work Filipe did with me made it so I could actually rationally think and take the steps to remove it myself and I am really proud. I'm really pleased I invested the money into Felipe's service and would recommend anyone with a phobia to give it a try. I don't love spiders, but I am able to think straight and take steps to remove it. I feel so much more free and independent and feel like I could deal with a larger one if I had to.

Filipe, thank you so much for restoring my faith in myself and for guiding me in a such helpful, positive and constructive way. Your support and calm and reassuring approach has made such a tremendous difference to my life and how I will continue to approach things going forwards. To be able cast away the fear that was constantly looming so heavily over me has enabled me to relax and focus on enjoying what life has to offer, no longer feeling constrained and restricted. I am truly excited about exploring what I can achieve in the future that I never before believed would be possible. Thank you so very much.

I started this course feeling that my phobia was just something I was born with and would never be able to overcome. After only the first session my anxiety towards it had become manageable and a subject I can actually begin to talk about. The course has given me the tools I need to work to control my phobia and regain control over my fear. Huge thank you to Filipe I cannot recommend him highly enough.

  4. Verified clientVerified client - External link

Really glad to have worked with Filipe. I started to notice small, incremental changes quite soon after our first session and since finishing them I’ve definitely noticed a difference in how my phobia impacts my life (far far less than before). Highly recommend.

Why The Phobia Specialist?

I’ve helped clients beat a variety of phobias, including some so severe, they were unable to leave home. Overcoming a phobia you’ve potentially had your whole life can understandably seem like a huge undertaking. However, once you understand the psychology that drives the fear, you’ll discover phobias are very treatable.

Fast icon 1

Fast

A phobia is created and maintained by a vigilant part of the mind below your awareness. The associated anxiety you experience is in response to a pattern being matched where the trigger is a perceived threat to your wellbeing or survival. With this in mind, it’s easier to appreciate why phobias respond well to treatment that disrupts this response subconsciously at its root. This eliminates the need for lengthy, potentially costly treatments and provides a safe alternative to uncomfortable exposure therapies.
Effective icon 1

Effective

Therapy should be empowering! Being capable means not having to look to an external source for strength. Succeeding without reliance on therapy or medication. Through a Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) approach, you’ll uncover strengths and resources that will help you move forward confidently. True personal empowerment comes from natural internal changes that are both effective and lasting. Furthermore, everything’s completely personalised so you get the most out of the treatment.
Online icon 1

Online

Overcoming your phobia has never been more convenient. Webcam sessions make it possible to deliver the same high standard of conventional face to face therapy by meeting online. All you’ll need is a stable internet connection, webcam, microphone and preferably earphones/headphones. The professional platform we’ll be using is simple to use and completely secure. Fully accessible on your favourite device.

Phobia Categories

According to the DSM, specific phobias typically fall within five general categories:

Animals (spiders, dogs, insects)

Situational (flying, riding an elevator, driving)

Environmental (heights, thunder, darkness)

Other (choking, loud noises, drowning)

Medical/health (injections, broken bones, falls)

Specific or Isolated Phobias

These phobias revolve around a specific trigger and they make up the majority of phobias. The trigger could be an object, animal, situation, place, or activity. Examples include a fear of heights, dogs, needles, spiders, flying, insects etc.

Specific or isolated phobias are treated in 3 structured sessions that are approximately 90 minutes each.

All treatment includes a comprehensive support pack.

Complex Phobias

Complex phobias aren’t specific to any one thing. They usually develop in adulthood and are generally linked to the anxiety of certain situations or circumstances. The most common complex phobias are social phobia and agoraphobia.

A complex phobia has multiple facets that require working on. As a result, more sessions are needed to treat one. The number of required sessions will be discussed in the free assessment and will depend on individual circumstances.

  1. Do you provide any face-to-face therapy?

    1. Currently, all treatment sessions are conducted online via Microsoft Teams. This allows for convenient access and flexibility in scheduling sessions. Should there be any changes or exceptions in the future, we’ll be sure to inform you promptly.

  2. Do you help with issues other than phobias?

    1. I currently focus all my attention on helping people overcome phobias. However, I’m qualified and experienced in treating broader anxiety or depression-related issues too. If you would like help with something else, please drop me an email, and I’ll get back to you.

  3. How many sessions will I need?

    1. For isolated/specific phobias, our treatment is typically completed in three sessions. Examples include animal, environmental, situational, and bodily phobias. Complex phobias like agoraphobia or social phobia may require additional sessions, which will be discussed during the free assessment.

  4. Why don’t you treat US or Canadian residents?

    1. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide treatment to residents of the US or Canada due to legal and insurance constraints. We understand this may be disappointing and apologize for any inconvenience.

  5. Is the treatment available to children?

    1. I’m unable to provide treatment to minors due to the structure of the session and the nature of remote therapy. For effective treatment tailored to children, I recommend seeking face-to-face therapy with a qualified professional experienced in working with young individuals. To ensure you find a suitable therapist, consider consulting the National Council for Hypnotherapy’s register – https://www.hypnotherapists.org.uk/therapist-finder/.

  6. Could you provide more information about hypnosis?

    1. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation experienced by everyone in daily life. It’s a tool used in therapy to facilitate a calm state of mind, allowing us to work through treatment without anxiety hindering progress. Unlike stage hypnosis, it’s not sleep, and anyone can achieve this state, making it valuable for treating phobias.

  7. Will exposure therapy be part of the treatment process?

    1. You’ll be pleased to know that there is no direct exposure to your phobia trigger as part of the treatment. Unlike uncomfortable exposure therapy, our approach ensures a relaxed experience. We’ll monitor your progress, and any positive experiences you have in everyday life will occur naturally.

  8. Are there any specific preparations I should make for the sessions?

    1. The treatment is available via video call and on any device. It’s completed in the comfort of your own home, so there’s not much you need to prepare. Find a comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. Have a comfy seat you can lean back on. It’s recommended to bring headphones/earphones to the sessions. Always ensure your device is charged, and you have a stable internet connection. Other than that, we’ll cover everything as we go

  9. What is the timeframe between sessions?

    1. While the timing between sessions isn’t set in stone, they are generally spaced about a week apart. We can adjust this schedule to bring sessions closer together if needed to meet a deadline. However, it’s not advisable to separate sessions by more than a week.

  10. How long does each session typically last?

    1. Each session typically lasts between 75 and 90 minutes. However, I understand that everyone is unique, and we don’t rush the process.

  11. Is it necessary for me to understand the origins of my phobia?

    1. No, identifying the exact cause of your phobia is not necessary for treatment. Our approach focuses on future goals. During the process, we will discuss previous phobic incidents, but only with the intention of overcoming them, thereby facilitating effective treatment of your phobia.

  12. What certifications do you possess?

    1. As a qualified therapist for over 16 years, I hold certifications in hypnotherapy (NCFE awarded) and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) obtained in 2008. Additionally, I am fully accredited by both the National Council for Hypnotherapy and the UK government’s Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. Copies of my certificates are available on the homepage of my website.

  13. Will the treatment be effective for me? Are there any guarantees?

    1. While approximately 80%-90% of clients experience significant improvement and elimination of their phobia through our treatment, it would be misleading to promise guaranteed success for every individual. Success depends on various factors, including effort, determination, and motivation. Nonetheless, our structured approach has proven highly effective, with many clients overcoming lifelong phobias in just a few sessions, as evidenced by our Client Reviews.
