Understanding the fear

Recognising the fear, its triggers and the different ways it can affect everyday life.

Is fear of flying the same as ordinary travel nerves?

A phobia involves distress or restriction beyond a passing travel concern. The effect on plans, attention and participation helps describe the difference without needing to diagnose yourself.

Can flying fear overlap with claustrophobia?

Yes. Being in an enclosed space or unable to leave may be central to the concern. Identifying that helps distinguish it from fear about the aircraft itself.

What if I am more afraid of panic than an accident?

That is useful to explain. The expected bodily response and what it would mean to you can become a focus of treatment, rather than repeatedly discussing accident risk.

Why am I frightened when the cabin door closes?

The door can represent losing the option to leave. The concern may be enclosure or how you will feel rather than aircraft safety. That distinction helps treatment address the actual experience.

Can turbulence frighten me even when I know about flying?

Yes. Understanding movement and feeling comfortable with it are different aspects. Work can address the expectation and emotional response alongside accurate aviation information.

What if my fear starts weeks before departure?

The anticipation is part of the work. We can consider the mental pictures, checking and travel decisions involved, not only what happens after boarding.

Causes and avoidance

How the fear can develop, what keeps it going and why some situations feel harder than others.

Can flying fear begin after comfortable flights?

Yes. A later experience or change in circumstances can alter what flying means. The earlier period of comfort remains relevant, rather than being cancelled by the present fear.

Does there have to have been an aviation incident?

No. Some people recall an event, while others describe a gradual pattern or concern about confinement and their own response. Current experience is enough to begin discussing change.

Should I keep looking up flight safety figures?

Information can answer a specific question. If another statistic only reassures briefly before the search restarts, the expectation behind that search may need attention.

Why do I watch the cabin crew so closely?

You may be looking for reassurance in expressions and ordinary activity. When monitoring becomes continuous, it takes attention from the journey. Treatment can address the expectation behind the checking.

Treatment and progress

Exploring treatment, building confidence and recognising meaningful change.

How does CBT approach flight anxiety?

CBT explores predictions, feelings and behaviour, including interpretations of sensations and repeated checking. Practical learning can bring new information to those expectations.

What does exposure mean for flying fear?

Exposure means creating opportunities to experience relevant flying situations differently, rather than proving how much fear you can endure. Depending on the approach, that might involve airport surroundings, simulated cues or a flight. Positive experiences can be embraced as stepping stones towards greater freedom.

Our online programme does not carry out direct exposure exercises. Treatment provides a structured approach to helping your mind develop a more comfortable response to flying. Being able to settle into a journey and think about the people or places you are travelling to can make growing confidence and control rewarding in their own right.

Can virtual reality help with preparation?

Simulations can represent aspects of a journey, but the programme needs to address your actual concern. Our service uses therapeutic imagery rather than providing a VR system.

How might hypnotherapy be used for this fear?

We use focused attention, suggestion and imagery to prepare a more fitting automatic response to flying. The work relates to the stages and meanings that matter to you.

What could SFBT contribute to travel confidence?

SFBT keeps the work directed towards the travel you want and the capabilities you bring. A visit or opportunity gives the process a purpose beyond describing fear.

How is NLP-influenced work relevant to flying?

We can explore how a past flight or imagined future journey is represented and the emotional associations attached to it. The aim is less dominance from the old picture and a more capable expectation.

Can approaches be combined?

Yes. Our personalised programme draws on explanation, hypnotherapy, SFBT and NLP-informed work. The tools have a purpose within the individual plan rather than being added simply to increase their number.

Are airline fear-of-flying courses an option?

They are an option to explore. Some combine aviation information and behavioural support, with a flight included in certain formats. Check the current arrangements with the provider.

How long does overcoming flight fear take?

Our core programme has three sessions of 60 to 90 minutes, usually about a week apart, with supporting material and audio. We discuss your needs and the amount of support at the consultation.

Can a fear of flying be overcome?

Yes. We work towards freedom from the phobia, so booking, boarding and flying feel like ordinary parts of travelling rather than experiences organised around fear.

What should I do after a difficult journey?

Consider the actual concern that stood out rather than treating one journey as a verdict on your capability. It can provide useful information for focused therapeutic work.

Will treatment require me to book a flight?

No flight booking is required for our online sessions. Tell us what travel you want back or have planned; the work is personalised around that goal.

Practical questions and support

Preparing for everyday situations, choosing support and taking the next step.

Can I work on the fear online?

Yes. Our sessions are individual online appointments focused on understanding and personalised therapeutic work. The goals can concern real journeys without the appointment taking place on an aircraft.

Can I travel with someone I trust?

Yes. Company can be an ordinary preference. The goal is freedom to choose rather than a requirement to prove recovery by travelling alone.

Is distraction always a bad idea?

No. Reading, conversation and entertainment can be ordinary ways to spend a journey. The aim is a natural experience rather than needing a particular activity to suppress fear.

Should I tell the cabin crew that I am anxious?

You can tell them if you would like support. They can explain what help is available on that flight. Their role is separate from the personalised therapeutic work before travel.

What if I also have a health condition?

Keep the relevant medical care and discuss travel-related health questions with your healthcare professional. Phobia work addresses the fear response rather than replacing individual medical advice.

How can a partner support me?

They can listen to what you want back and discuss plans without making fear the centre of every conversation. Support can be practical while leaving you room for choice.

When is professional support worth considering?

If fear is deciding where you go or occupying the journey and its build-up, there is a meaningful issue to discuss. You do not need to wait until you stop flying altogether.

What is a useful first step today?

Start with the travel you want back. Our free 30-minute consultation is a chance to describe your experience, ask questions and understand the programme.
