Understanding the fear

Recognising the fear, its triggers and the different ways it can affect everyday life.

What is glossophobia?

Glossophobia means fear of public speaking. It can involve meetings, presentations, introductions or speeches. The name describes the subject of the fear rather than providing a diagnosis.

Is it the same as social anxiety disorder?

Not automatically. Public-speaking fear may occur within social anxiety disorder, including a pattern limited to performance situations. The wider experience and effect on life help clarify the distinction.

Can I be confident socially and still fear presentations?

Yes. A formal speaking role can carry a different meaning from conversation. You may feel comfortable with people until attention is directed towards you as a speaker.

Does it mean I am not a good communicator?

Fear does not measure your knowledge or ability to explain ideas. It can interfere with using those abilities in a particular setting. Treatment and communication-skills work address different aspects and can complement each other.

Why do I worry that people will notice my anxiety?

You may attach a negative meaning to being seen as nervous, such as appearing unprepared. The feeling, what others can observe and the conclusion you expect them to draw are separate parts of that concern.

Can video calls trigger the same fear?

Yes. Being heard or watched can matter online too. The self-view, silence and turn-taking may become particular cues, so the relevant format belongs in the treatment conversation.

Why can a small meeting feel harder than a large presentation?

The meaning of the audience can matter more than its size. Colleagues or decision-makers may feel more personally significant, and a discussion can seem less predictable than a prepared talk. Those details help identify what you want treatment to address.

Why can my mind feel blank when I know the subject?

Trying to retrieve words while monitoring your voice, face and audience can make the moment feel crowded. That does not establish a lack of knowledge. It is useful to describe where your attention goes and what you expect the pause to mean.

Why is answering questions different from delivering prepared material?

A question changes the direction of the exchange and may remove the certainty of a script. The concern can be about responding spontaneously rather than speaking itself. That distinction makes preparation more relevant to your actual goal.

Causes and avoidance

How the fear can develop, what keeps it going and why some situations feel harder than others.

Does it have to start with an embarrassing event?

No. Some people recall an event and others describe a gradual pattern. Current expectations and responses can be addressed without finding one defining incident.

Can criticism influence speaking fear?

It can help shape what a mistake seems to mean. A later speaking opportunity may then feel like a test of worth rather than an exchange of information. That meaning can be explored without assuming one universal cause.

Why does more rehearsal not always settle me?

Rehearsal can organise the message without changing a fear of judgement. If it becomes a demand to secure every word, it may leave questions or interruptions feeling especially significant.

Why do I keep replaying what I said?

You may be trying to determine how the contribution was received. When the review centres on perceived mistakes, it can preserve a narrow impression of the event and feed the next expectation. This pattern can be addressed in treatment.

Treatment and progress

Exploring treatment, building confidence and recognising meaningful change.

Can public-speaking fear be overcome?

Yes. The aim is to speak freely, with attention on the message and people listening. We work towards resolving the phobic response rather than making every speaking occasion a project in managing it.

What does CBT contribute?

CBT for social anxiety addresses beliefs about evaluation, self-focused attention and behaviours intended to prevent embarrassment. Practical work connects those ideas with observable experience rather than reassurance alone.

What is the purpose of exposure?

The purpose is to experience speaking with greater choice and capability, rather than to endure an audience until the fear stops. Positive speaking experiences can be embraced as stepping stones to something better.

Our online programme does not require direct exposure exercises or a performance in front of an audience. Treatment provides a structured approach to helping your mind develop a more comfortable response to being heard. Sharing an idea in a meeting, answering a question or giving a presentation can become rewarding as your attention returns to what you want to communicate.

How do you use hypnotherapy?

We use focused attention, therapeutic suggestion and imagery to prepare a more natural automatic response to being heard. The content is personalised around the speaking situations and outcome you want.

How does SFBT influence the programme?

It keeps the work directed towards what you want to contribute and the capabilities you bring. The purpose is a useful future in which speaking opportunities are available, rather than repeatedly defining you through anxiety.

What does NLP-informed work address?

It can explore the internal representation of an earlier speaking event or a future audience, and the emotional associations attached to it. The aim is less dominance from the old picture and a more capable expectation of future speaking.

Does your programme include virtual reality?

No. Our online work uses explanation and personalised therapeutic approaches, including imagery. Virtual-audience treatment is a separate option discussed in the guide, not equipment supplied by our programme.

How many sessions are in the programme?

The core programme has three individual sessions, generally about a week apart. Each lasts 60 to 90 minutes. We discuss your needs and how the programme fits at the initial consultation.

What support comes between appointments?

Supporting material and audio accompany the programme. They support the personalised work between appointments, while the sessions themselves remain an individual conversation and therapeutic process.

Will I become a different kind of person?

The goal is to use your own knowledge and personality freely, not adopt a performance persona. You can communicate in a style that feels like you without the fear determining whether you participate.

Will I have to give a speech during your sessions?

Our online programme focuses on understanding and personalised therapeutic preparation; it does not require an audience or a formal speech. We discuss the work with you and connect it with the speaking you want to do outside appointments.

Can online treatment help with face-to-face presentations?

Yes, our programme is delivered through individual online appointments while the goals can concern speaking in person. Explanation, imagery and personalised therapeutic work are shaped around the situations you want back.

Practical questions and support

Preparing for everyday situations, choosing support and taking the next step.

Can I use notes and still recover?

Yes. Notes can be an ordinary communication tool. The aim is freedom from the phobic response, not banning useful materials or proving that you can memorise everything.

Can I discuss an upcoming speech?

Yes. A particular occasion can help make your goal concrete. Mention the date and what matters about it so the conversation can address your priorities and the available time.

What if anxiety affects other social situations too?

Describe that wider pattern. Speaking fear can form part of social anxiety, and the support should fit the full experience rather than assume that one performance situation explains everything.

Will the self-check diagnose me?

No. It reflects your selected experiences and the changes you might value. It does not diagnose social anxiety or grade your speaking ability.

How do I begin?

You can book a free 30-minute consultation to discuss what speaking is like now and what you want back. Bring your questions; you do not need a diagnosis or a complete account of how it began.
